USMMA’s Porter sets new school record in 3M dive

The Island Now

The USMMA men’s swimming and diving team lost for only the second time this season, falling to nationally-ranked NYU, 169-73, on the road on Friday night. But the news wasn’t all bad.

Senior Gerrit Porter  broke the Academy record for the three-meter dive (six dives) event with a score of 367.95, besting 2008 National Champion Nick Halbach’s mark.

Porter won both the one- and three-meter competitions and his scores qualified him for nationals on both boards.

The only other Mariner win on the night was freshman Christopher Kahl, who touched first in the 200 back with a season-best time by two seconds.

Sophomore Nick Lambson  recorded a season-best time in the 1000 free by 15 seconds, while senior Case Kuikhoven had his best time of the year in the same event by 16 seconds.

Junior Karl Sasse set a new personal-best in the 100 free and a season-best in the 50 free and sophomore Joshua Jepsen turned in his best time of the season in the 200 individual medley by one second.

Sophomore Jordan Weaver and freshman Bryce Carroll both set new season-best times in the 200 IM and junior John Terselic registered his best time of the season in the 500 free by four seconds.

In defeat, the Mariners fall to 4-2 on the season, while the No. 7 Violets improve to 8-0.

The Mariners return to action on Saturday, Jan. 30, when they travel to Madison, N.J., to take on Landmark opponents Drew and Goucher in a tri-meet. First race is scheduled for 1 p.m.
