Readers Write: Udall’s Pond nets threaten wildlife

The Island Now

‘An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure’  may be a good saying to keep in mind when considering winding down the Udalls Pond project.

The letter by Janet Fine in the June 13 edition showed a wonderful spirit of action and cooperation in trying to save a turtle that was trapped in the netting in the pond. A swan had also been trapped there previously.

This bright orange netting was placed in the pond to protect seedlings that were planted inside the pond.

I am not clear why the decision was made to plant inside the actual pond, but it certainly looks as if that effort has not succeeded, and the netting at this time does not seem to have any purpose. Perhaps Mother Nature knows best.

At any rate, removing the orange netting, and also the black nets placed on the sides of the pond during the repair, would be a good idea at this time.

Eyesores will be removed, and the pond will be safer for the wildlife living in and on it.
