Tri-M Music Honor Society welcomes 41 new members at North schools

On April 26, North High School Chapter 2605 of the Tri-M Music Honor Society hosted its 23rd annual induction ceremony, recognizing high school and middle school students who demonstrate scholarship, musicianship, and leadership. The ceremony welcomed 41 members to Chapter 2605 at North High School and Junior Chapter 5695 at North Middle School.

Student officers of Chapter 2605 also extended Honorary Lifetime Memberships to six individuals for their outstanding contributions to the school’s music programs. This year’s honorees are: parent booster Karen Lee, current Great Neck Public Schools music educators Amy Kempton and Dr. Janine Robinson, retired music educator Roger Ames, retired North High Performing and Fine Arts Department Head Neil Saggerson and retired North High Principal Bernard Kaplan.

The induction ceremony was led by Tri-M Advisor Joseph Rutkowski and 2017-18 Tri-M Co-presidents Elana Xu, Keva Li, and Isabel Yang. Senior violinist Isabel Yang entertained the audience with a performance of “Meditation” from Thais by Massenet, accompanied by pianist Pamela Levy. The program also included the installation of new officers for 2018-19: Sam Calto, Michael Cohenmehr, Daniel Itzkowitz, Christopher Lu, Molly Racsko, Madeline Yang, Kayla Yousefzadeh, and Daniel Zeng.

The Tri-M Music Honor Society, a program of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), recognizes students for their efforts and accomplishments in music on the basis of musicianship, scholarship, character, leadership, and service to their school and community. The organization’s standards serve to challenge students to greater efforts and achievements and to encourage the pursuit of excellence.

The Tri-M chapters of North High and North Middle encourage participation in music programs and service to the Great Neck community through a variety of endeavors, including performances at local nursing homes, children’s hospitals, and seasonal events. Chapter 2605 at North High is the current “Chapter of the Year,” as awarded by the National Association for Music Education (NAfME).

Members of Tri-M Chapter 2605 at North High for 2018-19 are: Samuel Calto, David Cheung, Michael Cohenmehr, Daniel Itzkowitz, Christopher Lu, Arabella Notar Francesco, Cheoungjun Oh, Nina Phillips, Molly Rasko, Rachel Schlusselberg, Sabrina Schlusselberg, Ashley Schlusselberg, Katherine Smolens, Madeline Yang, Rachel You, Kayla Yousefzadeh, and Daniel Zeng.

Members of Tri-M Junior Chapter 5695 at North Middle for 2018-19 are: Aiden Banilivi, Jack Brenner, Mia Carrillo, Jaslyn Gao, Ava Hoffman, Liora Kaya, Dani Kobrick, Joelle Kokhabi, Matthew Kwong, Linda Li, Tamar Noy, Sierra Plotkin, Emely Renteria, Hannah Romano, Owen Roubeni, Shai Shoshani, Nikita Soleymani, Samantha Stashower, Katherine Sun, Kirsten Tam, Katharine Tang, Kelly Yam, Christine Zhou, and Alex Zhuang.

Music faculty at North High and North Middle include: Fine and Performing Arts Department Head Pamela Levy and Joseph Rutkowski at North High, and Department Head Matthew Trinkwald, Robin Golub, Arielle Murdocco, and Anthony Virgilio at North Middle.
