Tractor-trailer crash slams traffic on LIE

All lanes on the Long Island Expressway in North Hills and Lake Success were closed in both directions for nearly four hours last Wednesday after a tractor trailer overturned on the highway.

Nassau County police said the crash occurred around 1:25 p.m., when the truck overturned and went through the center median between exits 33 and 34.

The driver of the gravel-hauling truck was brought to North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset for non-life threatening injuries, police said.

Manhasset-Lakeville Fire Department Capt. Lee Genser said the department assisted in slowing an active fuel leak and was able to “dyke a storm drain to prevent the runoff from going in.”

Genser said the department extinguished a small fire in the cab of the truck.

The state Department of Transportation, he said, was called to the scene to “sand the roadway” and pick up gravel that had spilled from the truck onto the eastbound side of the LIE.

Police said two lanes in the eastbound side of the highway reopened around 4:11 p.m.

By 5:45 p.m., police said, all lanes in both directions were reopened.

There were no other vehicles involved in the accident.
