Town Supervisor attends transgender remembrance

The Island Now

North Hempstead Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth attended the Transgender Day of Remembrance ceremony at the Episcopal Church of St. Margaret in Plainview on Nov. 22.

Bosworth spoke about the importance of providing anti-discrimination protection for residents and referred to the Town unanimously passing an amendment to Town Code on June 2, which added “gender identification” as one of the protected classes.

Juli Grey-Owens, Executive Director of the Long Island Transgender Advocacy Coalition, presented Bosworth with an award in honor of her leadership, compassion and fearless support of the transgender community.

The Transgender Day of Remembrance was founded in 1999 to memorialize the murder of Rita Hester in Allston, Massachusetts as well as all transgender people who were murdered in the past due to transphobia.
