Sponsored by Residents Forward and the Town of North Hempstead, this year’s Clean Green Main Street event will take place Sat., April 13.
Well over 100 volunteers will gather at the Long Island Rail Road Station parking lot at 9 a.m., ready to plant, sweep, pick up litter and prepare tree beds for the growing season.
“This event is important because it is a way for our community to come together and tackle our environmental problems,” Schreiber High School junior and Clean Green Main Street student leader Gabe Germain said. “It also engages younger kids in the issue of our increasingly polluted town.”
Unfortunately, there was a noticeable increase in the amount of debris that gathered this winter vs. last year. Port Washington is a beautiful community, but the plastic bottles, wrappers, cigarette butts and soiled food containers along Main Street deter shoppers and strollers.
Residents Forward takes the clean-up aspect of this event very seriously and works with a high school leadership team to get Main Street clean again as well as bursting with spring flowers.
“I believe that the Clean Green Main Street event is important because all of the litter on Main Street builds up and eventually ends up in the water,” Schreiber High School junior and Clean Green Main Street student leader Nick Chase said. “The activity helps to clean the environment and it teaches people about the importance of taking care of our community.”
Don’t miss the chance to meet Residents Forward Bag Monster that will be wearing about as many bags as the average consumer uses in just one year. Families, individuals of all ages, neighborhoods and Scouts are all encouraged to help. Students only need to volunteer for one hour to receive Certificates of Community Service. Elementary school children are welcome, but adult supervision is a must.
Performers with Bach to Rock will again entertain volunteers with great live music and Sara Siskind with Hands On Healthy will share creative ideas for healthy and delicious snacks that families can make at home. Members of Kiwanis Manhasset/Port Washington are volunteering with Schreiber Key Club and Tree Hugger members.
The Town of North Hempstead will have a sustainability table with information on its local recycling, composting and rainwater collection programs.

All tools, gloves and other materials will be provided. Please wear comfortable work clothes, a hat and sunscreen. There is no need to pre-register, but reserving a space, especially for groups (which are welcomed and appreciated), is recommended.
