Council Member Veronica Lurvey recently honored Manhasset High School alumni Luke Chan and James Monroe for their commitment and dedication to the local community.
Luke Chan, a sophomore at Princeton University, worked on a project to provide support to students at the Adventures in Learning after-school program during the COVID-19 pandemic.
During the summer he assisted the Manhasset/Great Neck EOC to develop and implement a plan to provide a variety of educational and recreational activities during its 6-week Summer Program while remaining mindful of the need to continue to observe COVID protocols to protect the health and safety of staff, volunteers, and program participants.
James Monroe, a freshman at Marist College, provided valuable constituent services and assistance on a variety of government matters during his summer internship in Council Member Lurvey’s office. Working alongside with Luke and Lurvey’s office, James also reached out to local restaurants and businesses and helped to arrange for two weeks’ worth of lunches for the students in the summer program.
Contributing businesses included: Antonino’s Italian Restaurant, Bistro Burger, Crawford’s, Gino’s Pizza of Manhasset, King Kullen, La Pizzeria, Manhasset Bagels, Orlando’s Deli, Roya’s, Sweet Temptation Bakery, Umberto’s of Manhasset, and Villa Milano.
Additionally, Lurvey partnered with Temple Israel of Great Neck, who provided a monetary contribution to the Manhasset/Great Neck EOC as well.
Manhasset/Great Neck EOC Executive/Head Start Director Stephanie Chenault expressed her appreciation for the assistance and support from Council Member Lurvey as well as Luke and James.
Everyone’s combined efforts helped make for a successful summer program that gave the community’s children many opportunities to learn and grow while developing new friendships and skills.
On behalf of the town, Lurvey recognized both Luke and James for their community service and for helping others in need and presented them with certificates of recognition to commend them for a job well done.
