Town changes vet tax breaks

The Island Now

Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bosworth, Receiver of Taxes Charles Berman and the town’s Veterans Advisory Committee have announced to residents a change to the law regarding veterans’ exemptions on 2017-2018 school tax bills.
Signed into Chapter 253 of the Laws of 2016, the bill authorizes school districts to grant the Cold War Veterans Property Tax Exemption to homeowners who served in the armed forces during times other than wartime from September 1945 through Dec. 1991.
This law is in addition to the Alternative Veterans’ Property Tax Exemption which was signed into law in 2013.
In order for a Cold War Veteran to receive this benefit, each of the local school districts must adopt the legislation by Dec. 31, 2016 for the exemption to be applied to the Oct. 2017 school tax bill.
Therefore, Bosworth, Berman and the committee are urging residents to contact their local school district and ask them to opt-in and adopt this property tax exemption before the Dec. 31 deadline.
For more information, call 311 or (516) 869-6311 from outside the Town.
