Town celebrates “Tree City USA” distinction

The Island Now

Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bosworth and the Town Board celebrated the Town being recognized as a “Tree City USA” by the Arbor Day Foundation.

This is the tenth year that the Town has received the designation of “Tree City USA.” This designation is given out to towns and cities that have a viable tree management plan and program.

In order to be eligible to be recognized as a “Tree City USA” community, certain requirements must be met such as having a Tree Board or Department, having a Tree Care Ordinance, having a Community Forestry Program and the observance of Arbor Day.

The “Tree City USA” program was created by the Arbor Day Foundation, which is the nation’s leading community forestry program that provides a foundation for effective and well-organized community tree care.

It is also facilitated in cooperation with the USDA Forest Service and the New York Department of Environmental Conservation. This program provides direction, technical assistance, public attention, and national recognition for urban and community forestry programs in thousands of towns and cities that more than 93 million Americans call home.
