Thomaston cuts fee for repairs

The Village of Thomaston waived its building permit fee for residents applying to repair damage from Hurricane Sandy at a board of trustees meeting Tuesday night.

The fee, which scales based on the cost of construction, was nixed after public discussion, said Village of Thomaston Mayor Robert Stern.

“There was a lot of interest,” said Stern. “People appeared and they talked about it.”

No residents had applied for storm damage repairs as of Wednesday, according to Stern.

Stern also said the board was weighing whether or not to overturn its prohibition on gasoline- and natural-gas powered generators in light of concerns over future blackouts.

Thomaston was hit hard by Sandy, Stern told the Great Neck News.

“We were about the third hardest hit of the villages,” he said. “We had about 60 odd trees knocked down.”

The village is in the process of filing reimbursement claims with the Federal Emergency Management Agency for recovery efforts, Stern said.
