A taste of Peru at food festival at museum

The SUMAQ Peruvian Food Festival will kick off its 7th edition, which will take place at the Cradle of Aviation Museum on Saturday, Aug. 26 and Sunday, Aug. 27, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The festival has become one of the most anticipated culinary events of the year, attracting food enthusiasts from the entire tri-state area.

SUMAQ will bring together more than 20 food exhibitors and top Peruvian chefs, a mixture of local and award-winning chefs from Peru.

“Our mission, in partnership with Peru’s Gastronomic Association, is to help promote and disseminate Peruvian cuisine and culture in New York,” said festival coordinator Vicky Diaz. “Each year we strive to showcase the diversity of Peruvian gastronomy, as well as talented chefs that are innovating and taking our ancient flavors to another level.”

Participants this year will include: La Caja China de Juan Talledo with roasted pork and chicken, Tamales de Magaly Silva with quinoa tamales and Kankachos Tinajani with baked lamb.

SUMAQ’s Chef of the Year Award will be presented to a young entrepreneur with a humanitarian spirit, José Luis Chavez, co-owner and executive chef of Mission Ceviche in New York City.

“José, truly embodies our mission, not only are we honored by have him accept this recognition but, we are inspired by his work,” Diaz added. “Most recently, he spearheaded a campaign to unite chefs from around the world to raise funds for people devastated in Peru and Venezuela.”

Live music and cooking demos will take place in the Dome Theatre from 2:30 to 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday by Chavez, as well as Miguel Aguilar of Surfish Bistro, Ezequiel Valencia of Jalea Restaurant and José Lujan from Peru, among others.

This year’s event will feature great new additions, such as “cuy crocante con risotto de quinua” (fried cuy with quinoa risotto) and over 30 traditional Peruvian dishes.

Tickets to the event are as follows: $15 adults; $7 children (2-12).

Parking is free.

The Cradle of Aviation Museum is located at Charles Lindbergh Boulevard in Garden City.
