Swan Club reopens after sickness scare

The Swan Club reopened early Friday after workman spent a day sanitizing and disinfecting the Glenwood Landing catering facility under the direction of the Nassau County Department of Health.

The upscale club was closed on Thursday after more than 100 patrons became ill after attending events earlier in the week.

“They have met all the conditions, with some operational monitoring at the facility to ensure that the food handling is safe and proper,” county Health Department spokesperson Carolyn McCummings said.

McCummings said the department received calls on Wednesday after learning that many guests had fallen ill after dining there for various special events and ordered the facility closed.

The entire facility was sanitized and disinfected under the supervision of the health department on Thursday, McCummings said.

Swan Club general manager Shelley Silver said the board of health also helped train her staff of waiters, bartenders, and bridal attendants to ensure all proper procedures are being fully implemented.

The club will also now hire its own food inspector and has already hired a company to sanitize antimicrobials, mold, and mildew, Silver said.

“We don’t believe the illnesses were food-born or food poisoning, but all purveyors are currently being investigated,” she said. “This is not something we did wrong.  We want everyone to be happy and healthy.  [Moving forward] we will be the gold standard in catering halls.”

Silver said that as a courtesy, some patrons of the club may be reimbursed as a result, but that will be conducted on a case-by-case basis.

“We are doing anything that is humanly possible to be proactive,” she said.

The club will continue to host its pre-planned weekend events, Silver said.
