Support those on front lines; pool season up in the air

The Island Now
Village of Williston Park Mayor Paul Ehrbar.

At 7 p.m., each Tuesday, all Nassau County Fire Departments are activating their sirens to honor health care workers, first responders and all essential workers, mandated to work during the COVID-19 crisis.

I ask all residents to come out by their front door and clap, make noise, bang pot lids, etc., to recognize those individuals. Also, every night, a number of residents are doing this.

I encourage all to participate, if not each night, at least on Tuesdays. We have many residents and/or their families who are working in the health-care industry, law enforcement, government and other essential services.

Please show your appreciation and ask your family and neighbors to do likewise.
Remember to “social distance” during this activity.

There have been a number of questions raised regarding the opening of the Roger Fay Williston Park Pool this summer, in light of the statewide lockdown.

At this point in time, a decision cannot be made on a village level, as the governor is the only one, at this time, who can dictate the opening of pools. While the village waits for direction, plans are being put in place in anticipation that the pool will be opened.

Prior to the COVID-19 crisis, it had been decided that the pool would open for the weekend prior to Father’s Day weekend and then open full time on Father’s Day weekend.

As it stands now, there are three possibilities: Pool opens on Father’s Day weekend, opens later, which would lead to a shortened season, or not open at all.

Once the appropriate information is obtained and a decision made, the Village will inform residents. I am hopeful that we can open in mid-June, as usual, but time will tell.

Village Hall remains closed to the public; however, reduced staff is there daily, to ensure village operations continue to function.

As has been happening since the “lockdown,” any resident who has questions or concerns, can contact village staff at 516-746-2193 during regular business hours(8 a.m.-4 p.m.).

The water department remains functional and the sanitation schedule is unchanged. However, for those involved with “spring cleaning” please spread large amounts of trash over two or three scheduled pickup days.

Please continue to reach out to those living alone, especially seniors, to make sure they are alright or if they may need assistance. If any resident is aware of someone in need, please reach out to me on my cell phone (516-941-8463).

Although we all have heard this many times, I want to reiterate the following: Follow the guidelines, wear a mask when in public and not able to “social distance,” continue social distancing, wash your hands and avoid touching your face.

Drivers be aware of those out walking, jogging and riding bikes.

Stop at stop signs and drive carefully to help protect all.
