Updated vote totals from the Nassau County Board of Elections continue to show U.S. Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-Glen Cove) and Town of Hempstead Engineering Commissioner Douglas Tuman hold leads in the primaries for the 3rd and 4th congressional districts, even as thousands of absentee votes remain unreported by the New York State Board of Elections.
In June, Gov. Andrew Cuomo extended the deadline to submit absentee ballots for the congressional primary races until the day of the election on June 23. To be counted, the absentee ballots for the primary had to be postmarked by June 23, state officials said.
On election night, Suozzi was leading by a nearly 2-to-1 margin over Melanie D’Arrigo and Michael Weinstock in the Democratic primary in the 3rd Congressional District, according to figures provided by the New York State Board of Elections, with early results showing the incumbent congressman with 59 percent of the vote, D’Arrigo in second place with 34 percent, and Weinstock in third with 7 percent.
Updated totals from the Nassau County Board of Elections showed Suozzi with 14,899 votes, D’Arrigo with 5,890 votes and Weinstock with 1,541 votes. The election boards in Suffolk and Queens, where the district also extends, have not yet updated their totals.
Weinstock, of Great Neck, conceded to Suozzi the afternoon of June 24. D’Arrigo has not yet conceded the race.
The 3rd District includes Manhasset, Roslyn, Port Washington, Great Neck and Floral Park, among other areas, and stretches from Whitestone, Queens, to Kings Park in Suffolk County. The winner of the primary will face Republican nominee George Santos of Queens in November; he ran unopposed.
Additionally, updated totals from the Nassau County Board of Elections show that Tuman, of West Hempstead, has a large lead in the contest for the Republican nomination to run against U.S. Rep. Kathleen Rice (D-Garden City) in the 4th Congressional District.
Updated totals from the county board show that Tuman had received 6,552 votes, and his opponent, Cindy Grosz, a columnist, radio personality and Jewish activist, had received 2,255.
The 4th Congressional District is situated in central and southern Nassau County, including Floral Park, Garden City, Hempstead, Mineola, Carle Place, New Hyde Park and Westbury.
Efforts to reach the New York State Board of Elections and the Nassau County Board of Elections were unavailing.
