Readers Write: Sturim underestimated while Rice gets a pass

The Island Now

I took umbrage at the dismissive characterization of Howard Sturim in your editorial of February 7, 2014.

In your rush to bolster Ms. Rice’s bona fides you stated, “Most county residents can probably not name the Republican candidate who ran against her (Kathleen Rice).”

How do you know?  What this resident remembers clearly is the now prescient opening statement made by Mr. Sturim in the televised debate between the incumbent and her Republican challenger.

He said, “She is using this election as a stepping stone to higher political office.”

Guess what?  At her first opportunity, just four short months after her re-election, Ms. Rice is jumping ship and running for the seat being vacated by U.S. Rep. Carolyn McCarthy.

What of her unfinished agenda? What of her plans to rid her constituency of criminals (petty and otherwise)? What of her promise to go after political corruption in a way no DA has ever done before?

Guess she saw a more attractive opportunity.

Who will blame us when we say, “Who was that lady District Attorney? I can’t remember her name.  All I know is that she ran away as soon as she could.”
