Student researchers score at science fair

Manhasset Hight School students Mike Kusnierek and Pat Fahey took first place in the Engineering Category, and to Bryan Herbert, Steven Tranchina and Aaron Tabazedah, who took third place in the Environmental Category, at the ISWEEP competition in Houston, Texas.

ISWEEP (International Sustainable World Energy Engineering Environment Project Olympiad) is  an international science fair,  unique in that it focuses on energy, engineering, and environmental projects.   

I-SWEEEP’s goal is to plant a seed in high school students into looking for alternative solutions for a sustainable world. 

Fahey’s and Michael Kusnierek’s submission was entitled “Engineering a Biosensor Using the Bioluminescent Algae Pyrocystis fusiformis to Detect Heavy Metal Toxicity in Water.”   

The submission by Bryan Herbert, Aaron Tabibzedeh, and Steven Tranchina was titled “Use of FT-IR Spectroscopy to Analyze Culturing Conditions and Biodiesel Production Techniques for Chlorella vulgaris.
