Strathmore gas leak causes brief evacuation

A few dozen Strathmore residents were evacuated from their homes late Wednesday night as National Grid and PSEG officials worked to shut down a gas leak that took place near Chapel Road, police said.

Police said no one was injured from the leak and that residents were transported to a nearby Manhasset-Lakeville Fire Department station until it was deemed safe to return to their residences.

Police said Third Precinct officers responded to a 9-1-1 call regarding the leak at 11:57 p.m. and were later joined by National Grid and PSEG officials who shut down power in the area and turned off the valve to stop the flow of gas.

By 4 a.m. Thursday, residents returned to their homes, police said.

Though electrical power in the area was quickly restored, National Grid spokeswoman Wendy Ladd said gas was not restored until Thursday afternoon.

Efforts to reach Manhasset-Lakeville or PSEG were unavailing.
