Stolen Gold Coast era gates still missing

A wrought iron gate that once stood on a Gold Coast era property and was stolen from a Roslyn property last November is still missing, authorities said.

Nassau County police are offering up to $5,000 for information leading to the recovery of the gate or arrest of the subject or subjects who removed it from DiStefano Landscaping, located at 30 West Shore Road, just north of the William Cullen Bryant Viaduct.

The gate, which appeared rusted and bound by chains in a photograph released by police, is thought to have been stolen in the overnight hours of November 21, 2014. The gate is valued at $1,000.

Phone messages placed to DiStefano Landscaping were not returned.

According to a Dec. 21, Newsday story, the 15-foot-high, 2,500-pound gate was believed to have once stood on the property of the Pembroke estate in Glen Cove, which was built between 1916 and 1918 for mining entrepreneur Joseph Raphael DeLamar.

A neighbor had gifted the gate to DiStefano family patriarch Tony, 89, who emigrated to Manhasset from Rome in the early 1950s, according to Newsday. The gate remained at the landscaping business until it was stolen.

“I’d never find another one like that,” he told Newsday at the time.

In December, DiStefano’s son, also named Tony, was offering a $2,000 reward for information leading to the stolen gate.

“My father just liked looking at them,” the younger DiStefano, 60, of Port Washington, told Newsday.

The DiStefanos said they had no plans to get rid of or renovate the gates.
