Stapes in Garden City Park is participating in the national office supplies chain’s 5th annual Staples for Students drive to collect school supplies for children in need.
The drive, run in collaboration with DoSomething.org, features recording star Bella Thorne and aims at encouraging kids to drop supplies off for their peers at local Staples stores through Sept. 15.
The Garden City Park Staples outlet at 2310 Jericho Turnpike will bring the supplies to the Boys and Girls Club of Glen Cove for distribution, according to Staples spokeswoman Karen Pevenstein.
“Every store is matched with a local charity. You can either drop off supplies or donate money at the register,” Pevenstein said. “The campaign goal is simple. Millions of kids go back to school each year without basic supplies.”
Staples is donating $125,000 worth of school supplies as part of the effort this year. The chain has raised $2 million for the campaign since 2008, Pevenstein said.
“I am so excited to celebrate this awesome program with my fans and fellow celebrities with the help of Staples and DoSomething.org,” said singer Bella Thorne in a statement. “It’s an honor to be the face of this campaign, and I encourage everyone to get involved to collect supplies.”
Thorne teamed up with celebrities including Harry Shum, Jr., Kendall and Kylie Jenner, JoJo, Kat Graham and teen volunteers to stuff backpacks with school supplies for Los Angeles-area students in need.
Thorne also entertained guests with the first performance of her newest original single, “Can’t Stay Away,” with emerging boy-band IM5 followed by Elton John protégé, Tallia Storm, making her U.S. debut performance.
Past celebrity supporters have included Jordin Sparks, Ciara, Nikki Reed and the cast of Pretty Little Liars.
While the campaign targets teens, Pevenstein said Staples hopes that when parents are purchasing school supplies for their children, they’ll make a donation at the stores’ check-out counter.
The Staples for Students campaign also features a public service announcement starring Thorne airing on television and radio stations nationwide. Staples for Students continues to accept donations at all Staples stores nationwide through Sept. 15.
The Staples for Students campaign is offering several ways for teens to get involved in this year’s programs, either by visiting Staples for Students or participating in one of the ways below:
•Request an Action Kit: Whether it’s summer camp, summer sports leagues, or at neighborhood block parties, students can get tips, resources and flyers on running their own school supply drives in their neighborhoods.
•Text SUPPLIES to 38383: Students will receive more information on how to begin their own school supply drive or find their nearest Staples drop-off location (standard text messaging rates apply).
•Raise Your Hand: Teens can raise a virtual hand to the cause by uploading photos and videos or sharing details through social media. For every “hand” raised, $1 will be donated by Staples (up to $10,000) to the cause.
