St. Mary’s club marches in Columbus Day parade

The Island Now

The Saint Mary’s High School Italian Club was invited to participate in the annual New York City Columbus Day Parade for the third consecutive year along Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue last week. The parade honors Italian-Americans’ contributions to New York City and draws around million spectators and 35,000 marchers.

The Italian Club is just one of the many after school clubs and extracurricular activities offered to students of Saint Mary’s High School, Manhasset. Under the direction of club moderator Carlo Puca, students engage in activities that promote knowledge of Italy as a country, culture, and community through food, entertainment, sports and history. Membership is open to all students.

The Modern Language department offers classroom instruction of Italian I, II, Italian II Honors, Italian III, Italian III Honors, Italian IV Honors and Advanced Placement Italian that enable students to excel from basic to college level Italian. In addition, students have the opportunity to further study the language via the school’s online digital university program.

Each year, St. Mary’s students have the opportunity to travel abroad on their winter recess. This year, students and chaperones will travel to Italy to further enhance their studies and cultural experience. This past summer, four St. Mary’s boys’ soccer players participated in a training camp in Calabria, Italy.
