Singer-songwriter to close out folk series

John Gorka, an acclaimed contemporary American singer-songwriter, closes out the 2013-2014 season of First Saturday Concerts for the Folk Music Society of Huntington on June 7. 

The 8:30 p.m. concert at the Congregational Church of Huntington at 30 Washington Drive, off Route 25A in Centerport, is preceded by an open mic at 7:30 p.m.

According to The New York Times: “Listening to John Gorka sing, one can get goose bumps all over. There are many reasons: fresh lyrics, a stunning emotional baritone, and his twisted humor.” 

Rolling Stone has touted Gorka as the “preeminent male singer-songwriter of the New Folk Movement,” while The Boston Globe has noted: “Gorka is widely heralded for the sophisticated intelligence and provocative originality of his songs.”

Now in its 45th year, the Folk Music Society of Huntington presents two monthly concert series, a monthly folk jam and an annual folk festival in conjunction with the Huntington Arts Council. The Lords of Liechtenstein and He-Bird, She-Bird share a Hard Luck Café bill at  Huntington’s Cinema Arts Centre on Thursday evening, June 19. while the Huntington Folk Festival is slated for Saturday, July 19, from noon until late in the evening, at Huntington’s Heckscher Park. 

Now in its ninth year, the free festival will feature an evening concert by Bobtown on the Chapin Rainbow Stage, preceded by an afternoon of unplugged showcases and song swaps featuring some three-dozen artists from the New York metropolitan area and beyond.
