Readers Write: Simple answers no response to hard questions

The Island Now

It is ironic that two letters to the editor that appeared in the Jan. 8, 2016 Great Neck News were on one page.

Hal Sobel, whom I consider a thoughtful progressive, wrote on some of the terrible problems we are faced with because of the reactionary influence and gutlessness of our leaders, and the failure of those who wield power to improve our political and economic system.

Below that, on the same page, was the letter from Dr. Emery Roth, who chose to repeat so many of the unfeeling arguments against those who care about their fellow men. It did not help his case that he used old distorted prejudices and insults in criticizing Karen Rubin.

I am also a progressive whose mantra is that an education that is deep and humane, and includes a study of history and sociology is basic.

It is very easy for Dr. Roth to suggest the cure: more religion, better families, and more respect for private property, but unless we understand more deeply the causes of disruptions to our society, we are stuck.

We have to think harder about ways to cure the baseless and oversimplified selfishness, cruelty and nostrums that afflict us.

It might open certain tightly closed minds, and possibly ameliorate the all too human tendency to blame.

It does not help to be experiencing some of the most tragic events all around us, but can we choose to follow a positive path?
