U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) will sponsor U.S. Rep. Tom Suozzi’s bill to ease a tax burden in Nassau and Suffolk counties when it reaches the Senate, says the congressman.

“I talked with Chuck Schumer, and he’s very enthusiastic,” Suozzi (D-Glen Cove) said in an interview.

The measure would increase the cap on the federal tax deduction for state income and local property taxes. President Donald Trump capped the deduction at $10,000 in a 2017 federal law that reduced taxes for corporations and most wealthy and middle class families, with Long Islanders and other Northeastern residents having to pay more in income tax.

“It’s very hard, because it’s hard to get the Republican votes from those Southern states, but he’s going to work on it,” Suozzi said.

Suozzi’s bill to increase the cap to $20,000 for the 2020 tax filing year, which passed in the House of Representatives last Thursday with bipartisan support from U.S. Rep. Peter King (R-Seaford), will go to the Senate in 2020.

“We’re probably going to do a press conference sometime soon to come out and announce that he’ll be sponsoring my same bill in the Senate,” Suozzi said.
