The Roslyn school district broke ground last Thursday on the first phase of school constructions projects that are being financed by $41 million in bonds approved by voters in 2014.

“This is was a long time coming,” board President Meryl Waxman Ben-Levy said. “It has taken over two years but it’s finally here.”

Ben-Levy said she is excited for the work to begin after two years of waiting. She said she is confident that students growing up in the district will have a brand new space to cater to their educational needs.

To fund the first phase of the construction projects, the board issued a $9 million bond in March, Superintendent for Business Joseph Dragone said.

The money will cover the cost of a new bus maintenance facility, field work at East Hills School, and extensive and interior renovations at Roslyn Middle School. The work is slated to be undertaken over the coming summer months.

Dragone said work will begin within weeks on a new bus maintenance facility, which will be located adjacent to the district’s buildings and grounds department on Parp Drive, at the rear of Harbor Hill School.

Renovation of the East Hills fields, which will address pressing needs for both playing fields and additional parking, will also begin in the spring.

There will be large-scale renovations to the East Hills library, classrooms and hallways, encompassing extensive electrical and ventilation system improvements, among other changes, will be undertaken during the summer vacation.

All but the library will be ready for occupancy for the opening of school in September; the library is slated for completion later in the fall, Dragone said.

Bids were also approved for work to be undertaken at the Roslyn Middle School during the summer, though on a far smaller scale than at East Hills.

Renovations will also be made at the middle school with lighting added to the gym and cafeteria with drainage repairs.

Dragone said some of the work will start over the summer but the library will take more than a year
