School board swears in officials, trustees

The Great Neck Public School board swore in its re-elected members and appointed school officials at a Monday night meeting that saw trustees pay tribute to each other’s service.

Board President Barbara Berkowitz, who was sworn in for an eighth year as president, reflected on a school year that forced the board to contend with challenges ranging from Hurricane Sandy to teacher layoffs.

“As our ultimate mission is to see that our children have a good year and emerge as productive citizens, then our bottom line is that we are accomplishing our goals,” Berkowitz said. “Not that we don’t always look for ways that we can improve.”

Berkowitz praised her fellow trustees and the administrators, teachers and professionals staff of the district.

“I want to thank each and every one of you in this room for the roles that you play – and they’re certainly varied – in assisting us to do all that we can for every child in this community,” Berkowitz said.

Trustee Donald Ashnekase touted the school budget’s easy passage this spring as a vote of confidence in the school district.

“That’s a way for the public to make a statement on how they feel about the quality of public education,” Ashkenase said.

Trustee Monique Bloom, the former head of the United Parent Teacher Council, was sworn in for her first elected term. Bloom was appointed last July following the resignation of former board Vice President Fran Langsner.

“We know what an asset you are to our board, and hope you have enjoyed your first year with us as much as we have enjoyed working alongside you,” Berkowtiz said to Bloom.

Bloom thanked the district’s voters for a “humbling” vote of confidence.

“You could not have a more welcoming community of educators and fellow board members,” she said. “I have loved this year, really, with all its challenges and all its newness.”

Berkowitz was re-elected president and sworn in next, with board Vice President Lawrence Gross crediting her for strong leadership and engaging with the Great Neck community.

“Clearly you’re the type of individual who has no ego involvement, but you should be because you do a wonderful job,” Gross said. “You do things because they’re right.”

Berkowitz again thanked the board, as she became, in her words, “verklempt.”

“It’s truly an honor and a privilege to serve this community,” Berkowitz said.

Berkowitz returned Gross’ praise as he was re-elected vice president of the board.

“You have been such a mentor, guide and role model for me personally,” Berkowitz said. “This board is so fortunate to have your guidance and leadership.”

And when Great Neck Superintendent of Schools Tom Dolan was sworn in, Berkowitz thanked him for guiding district through difficult times with “superb leadership.”

“I tell people all the time how lucky I am to work in Great Neck,” Dolan said.
