Reader’s Write: Sainthood of two popes well deserved

The Island Now

As a Catholic and as Past Grand Knight of St. Anastasia’s Knights of Columbus Council #5911 in Douglaston, I would like to applaud the Sainthood of Pope John Paul II and Pope John XXIII.

These two popes were beacons of light that tried to make the church more inclusive for all people. The church today must still find ways to deal with such issues such as sexual abuse, divorce, abortion and to allow women to become priests and male priests be permitted to marry, if they wish to.

These are difficult issues that need to be addressed and discussed by church leaders but will take time. Meanwhile for now we need to remember these holy men of God who wanted the best for all of humanity.

Let these two popes be remembered for how they tried to do the will of God here on earth. Praise God for these saints who graced us with their compassion and understanding.
