SADD sack

The Island Now

At a recent meeting of the East Williston Board of Education, Wheatley School Principal Sean Feeney said he had decided to close the Students Against Destructive Decisions organization, also known as SADD.

You probably thought SADD was the Students Against Drunk Driving. And it was until some public relations guru came up with the new name.  The original mission of SADD was to help young people say “No” to drinking and driving, according to the organization’s Web site.

The mission has since expanded to become a peer-to-peer education, prevention, and activism organization dedicated to preventing destructive decisions, particularly underage drinking, other drug use, risky and impaired driving, teen violence, teen suicide, yadda, yadda, yadda.

Overnight SADD lost its impact. We’d say it was a shame that the club was closing – if we thought anybody cared.
