A Roslyn research team comprised of ninth graders Sam Jacobson, Saydie Grossman, Hailey Margulies and Luke Christenson won one of three “best presentation” awards at the 2019 Medical Marvels Competition sponsored by Northwell Health. The competition asked ninth and tenth grade students to formulate a proposal to fight the growing vaping epidemic in high schools. The team based their proposal on the research project they have been working on this year with the help of their teachers Allyson Weseley and Michelle Mahepath.

At the competition, held March 8 at the Feinstein Institute, teams were given just two minutes to describe their proposal. Presentations were following by a one-minute question and answer session with judges, and presentation awards were given based on the teams’ performance.

Winning aside, the Roslyn team proclaimed the experience a great success. The competitive component was only a small part of the team’s visit. Students were also treated to several presentations about vaping including one that traced tobacco advertisements since the 1950s and an inspirational talk by Shep Messing, a former New York Cosmos soccer player.
