Nassau County police arrested a Roslyn man at his home late Tuesday night after an eight-hour standoff.

Steven Liebman, 50, was arraigned Wednesday in First District Court in Hempstead on charges of second-degree menacing and second-degree obstructing government administration after he threatened Nassau County Sheriff’s Department officers with what they thought was a rifle.

The sheriff’s officers came to Liebman’s house at 17 Tatterson Street at 3 p.m. Tuesday to serve him with civil court papers, police said.

When Liebman answered the door, he pointed an object at the officers that looked like a rifle, police said. Police later determined it was a BB gun.

The officers retreated and called Nassau County police at 3:25 p.m., police said. Police blocked off roads in the area and surrounded the house with multiple police cars and an ambulance.

Liebman surrendered and was arrested at 11:20 p.m., police said.

The police department’s Bureau of Special Operations, emergency service unit and a hostage negotiator were on the scene, police said. Police also deployed a helicopter over the area.

A Roslyn High School student named Joshua said he had to spend Tuesday night at his aunt’s house because the street where he lived was closed. He was unaware of any police activity happening at the time, he said.

State records indicate Liebman is a dentist who at one time practiced in Great Neck. A professional corporation for the practice that lists Liebman as the CEO with his Tatterson Street address has been inactive since 2009.

Liebman has no prior criminal violations.

Both charges against him are class A misdemeanors punishable by up to one year in jail and up to $1,000 in fines.

Liebman’s bail was set at $10,000. He is due back in court Friday.
