Roslyn High School’s Jeffrey Yu clinched first place in the material science and engineering category at this year’s Long Island Science and Engineering Fair (LISEF), entitling him to a week-long, fully paid trip to Phoenix, Arizona to compete in the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF).

Yu is a senior at Roslyn High School whose project focused on identifying an inexpensive way to increase the capacity of a liquid 3D printer. Jeffrey designed and built a new extruder mechanism using only the materials available to him at school and home. His testing verified the accuracy of the printer when printing in water and a hydrogel, and he also demonstrated that living cells could go through the printer without being harmed. “By lowering the cost of liquid 3D printing I hope to decrease the barrier to entry for both hobbyists and researchers to use this tool,” said Yu.

“It’s wonderful to see Jeffrey’s efforts rewarded like this,” said Allyson Weseley, Jeffrey’s research advisor at Roslyn High School. “Most ISEF projects are done in labs with a lot of support from professionals in the field. What Jeffrey was able to accomplish on his own is truly amazing.”

Other Roslyn winners at this year’s Long Island Science and Engineering Fair include Lindsey Rust (second place, behavioral science), Adrian Ke (third place, behavioral science), Justin Schiavo (third place, material science and engineering), and Asher Bykov (honorable mention, behavioral science).
