The pigeons can stay.

The Roslyn Board of Trustees held a Zoom meeting on Tuesday to discuss a resident’s request to  keep an existing pigeon coop and approved it unanimously.

The  homeowner, Behrooz Lavehim, had requested a permit to keep his late mother’s pigeon coop. When he requested the permit at the last meeting, Mayor John Durkin asked him to provide a list of his neighbors who would not have an issue with keeping the coop. Complying, Lavehim provided the board with his list.

As a result, Durkin said he would give his approval under the condition that “the permit will last for three years and the applicant will not replace pigeons that have been removed or aged out, and will not re-establish an aviary in the future.”

Trustee Marta Genovese interjected, asking “if any of his neighbors were present and in opposition of this request.” No neighbors were present.

The board then agreed to the permit.

The other matter discussed at the 30-minute meeting was a parking issue on Remsen Avenue brought up by a local resident. Liz Levine told the board that nonresident parking on her residential street has become an issue and asked the board for advice on how to fix it. Due to the proximity of many restaurants to her street, Levine said, over “40 cars” will be parked on Remsen Avenue on  weekend evenings.

Durkin said he has “seen it and understands her concerns.” Durkin and Trustee Sarah Oral concurred that it is a safety issue that needs to be addressed. The board agreed to look further into the situation and discuss it at the next meeting.
