Readers Write: Working hard and thankful

The Island Now

I’ve have just read an article in The Tablet by Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio of the Queens-Brooklyn Diocese.

The title was,” Work is an invitation from God.” In the article he said,” We must look at the work we do as an invitation from the creator to engage in completing the work God has begun.”

I whole heartily agree.

I am reminded as Labor Day has just passed that it is a time to be thankful for how far we have come. It is also a time to remember and to look back of all the fathers and mothers who worked hard long hours and who have fought for decent wages and hours so they could better provide for their families.

My grandfather — as told to me by my father — worked hard long hours in the 1890s and early 1900s, earned only $2 a day.

Things were so bad back than that my father was taken out of third grade at the age of 9 in 1899 and had to go to work.

My father was one of 13 children in this poor family.

As for myself I’ve been working since I was 17 and am still working at age 68.

And I have been working for the same company which is North East Plumbing in Mineola for over 36 years.

Truly as a nation we have come a long way due to those who have paved a better way of life for many of us today.

So please say a prayer of thankfulness to our creator who guided us along the way.
