Readers Write: Vote yes for PW school budget

The Island Now

On Tuesday, May 21, Port Washington residents will vote on the 2019-2020 school budget.  We hope you will take the time to vote yes.  We have been witness to the tireless work done by publicly elected, Port Washington School Board trustees.  As uncompensated volunteers, these trustees expend great efforts to improve and uphold our public school system.

The trustees spend months working with Port Washington Union Free School District administrators to prepare a comprehensive budget within the ill-advised tax cap.  They work with limited ability to raise local revenue to make up for less than desired state aid.  In spite of these numerous constraints, among countless others, they are somehow able to avoid cuts that would negatively effect our students.

The benefits of a good public school system are necessary to our success as a community, as a nation, and to the world at large.  Each and every resident of Port Washington has been a direct recipient to these benefits.  Voting yes to uphold the proposed budget will expand your role from recipient to benefactor.
