Readers Write: Vote Katz for Mayor of Great Neck Plaza

The Island Now

I was happy to hear that Leonard Katz will be running for mayor in the upcoming Great Neck Plaza mayoral election. I hope he will be elected so that residents will finally have a leader who will address the needs of his constituents and his community rather than ignoring them, as the current administration has done for the past 25 years.

I have lived in Great Neck Plaza for over a decade. One of the main reasons that I moved here was that the Plaza was a safe, beautiful, clean place to live.  During my past ten years in residency, general public safety concerns have increased. I have witnessed unwanted behavior with groups hanging around and harassing pedestrians and making many uncomfortable while out with family. This behavior gives people the message that the Plaza is not a safe environment.

In addition, I have noticed that many of the sidewalks in town are not being cared for. Commercial businesses are responsible for keeping the sidewalks adjacent to their businesses clean and safe, especially when it snows. The public space and sidewalks that have been bricked throughout the Village by Jean Celender’s administration have become a danger to pedestrian safety. The bricks remain in a dangerous state of disrepair. The elements have caused many of the bricks to become elevated, presenting hazards to baby strollers, pedestrians, and especially the very large population of seniors in the Plaza who enjoy walking in the Village.

The current administration is known for its lack of concern for the people in the Plaza. When Leonard Katz is elected mayor, he will work for the entire community to bring Great Neck Plaza back to the high standards that we remember and deserve. My goal is to begin a narrative with Leonard Katz when he is elected, to resolve and prevent dangerous outcomes to my community.

Please come out and vote for Leonard Katz and his team on March 18th.
