Readers Write: VGN fails to maintain roadway

The Island Now

The unpaved road in the Village of Great Neck, going from Beach Road to the Udall’s Pond and then to the Main Library is a part of, and it borders on a woodland preserve.

It was expanded, cleaned, and leveled a few years ago for the dredging operation the pond (a creek, in fact).

The road was to be restored to its pre-dredging condition. The latter involves nothing more than mowing it twice in a season.

The Kings Point end of Beach Road at Bayview Avenue, used for the same purpose, has been mowed regularly.

The Village of Great Neck has practically abandoned it.

Several phone calls to the Public Works Department have gone unanswered.

Once it was possible to walk on that road, around the scenic creek, to the Library via its north arm, and to the Strathmore via the south one.

Now, although $8 million have been spent to dredge and restore the creek, the only way to watch and enjoy the wildlife has been neglected.

There is at least one red fox is in the area, posing danger to small kids and pets.

The area has gone from wooded to wild to weird and dangerous to the nearby properties.

The village should keep its promise, and restore the road from the Beach Road to the library and maybe, to the  Strathmore to the state that it was in, only a few years ago.
