Readers Write: Town listening to concerns

The Island Now

I am writing to respond to the Friday, Sept. 30 letter “Readers Write: Town park not handicap friendly,” about North Hempstead Beach Park not being handicap accessible.
We appreciate Donald S. Hecht sharing his concerns about the conditions at the Greek Festival and are sorry to hear about the difficulties in navigating his son’s wheelchair.
The town appreciates him taking the time to make the point so clear.
North Hempstead Beach Park has curb cuts located from the parking lot to the promenade; however, they may have been blocked by the festival’s set up.
We will make sure to speak to vendors prior to any future events to assure that this does not happen again.
We will also look into this further to see if there are any existing problem areas that need to be fixed by patch work.
We will make sure to incorporate any needed improvements to our capital plan as part of our upcoming North Hempstead Beach Park Visioning project.
In the meantime, please do not hesitate to reach out to the town with any additional questions or concerns.
