Readers Write: Time for a change in Plaza leadership

The Island Now

As a long-time resident of Great Neck Plaza, I am dismayed by the incompetence shown by the mayor of the Plaza.

Each election year she remains unopposed.

Is this because she has created a “cushy” job for herself?

She gets a full-time salary, with perks to her husband’s firm, free dining in the plaza, etc.

Does she ever pay for goods and services in town?

Occasionally, Mayor Jean establishes committees.

I volunteered to be on one that was to make the Plaza better for the aging population in Great Neck.

I learned after the first meeting, if you questioned the mayor about her “projects,” it was an exercise in futility.

When asked about the traffic circle on Barstow Road, she immediately curtailed any conversation.

Is this traffic circle not a living memorial to the mayor?  Yet the traffic and visibility, or lack of is not monitored!

For years the parking conditions and traffic on Welwyn Road has been horrendous.

Despite multiple requests, letters to the editor, complaints about the conditions by Shop Delight, Mayor Jean refuses to have law enforcement personnel monitor this area.

Instead, she doubles the cost of meter fees and assigns traffic enforcement officers to ticket cars.

Would it not be proactive to be an advocate for safety on Welwyn Road?

The Plaza has so many empty stores, terrible traffic conditions and inadequate parking.

Rather than curtailing traffic on Welwyn Road, the mayor is creating a park adjacent to the Post Office.

How lovely it will be watching cars double and triple park, view the busses that are unable to make the turns, and ingest the fumes coming from the vehicles.

These are some of the virtues of Mayor Jean’s reign.

Mayor Jean dances at concerts in the park, promotes Thursday night dining in the Plaza as there are invariably multiple photo opportunities and free dinners for the mayor and her guests.

Is there not someone in this community who has the dedication, time, and desire to restore the great to Great Neck?

Clearly, with Mayor Jean, the town is running itself.

What is the cost of her salary and all the perks she receives to the residents of Great Neck Plaza?
