Readers Write: Threat of Trump presidency needs to be fought

The Island Now

During this weekend before the first presidential debate to be held at Hofstra University on Monday, Sept. 26, I felt that several people I met were feeling concern and a certain amount of dread.

They assuredly had been following events these past weeks and could not predict what might happen.

I, for one, am filled with disbelief that at this late date, so many have not absorbed the fact that a fabulist has so survived all the evidence that his past, indeed his entire life, has provided evidence that marks him as totally unfit to lead this nation.

I know that we have lived through a period in which the middle class has experienced difficult times, job losses, diminished earnings for hard work and productivity, and huge changes in our environment.

Because a hugely successful sector has benefitted while others have losing out, the moneyed class has spent billions of dollars on propaganda to advance their justification for this.

Their spurious theory that  giving them freedom from reasonable taxation and regulation would result in more job creation has returned. So many progressive programs face annihilation if Trump’s crew wins.

Aside from this basic fear is the sense that Trump has so damaged our conception of, and the pride we have so long held in our melting pot and the improvements that our society aspires to, that there is the prospect of more violence, division, unfairness, economic destruction, and even military adventurism.

We must, at almost the last minute, fight to change the minds of the undecided before this power hungry man and his unscrupulous, uncaring associates gain the upper hand.
