Readers Write: Summer Together 2019: A success for Port families

The Island Now

The organizers of “Summer Together” sincerely thank the Port Washington community for supporting our second year. Summer Together is a wholly volunteer-run program that funds summer camp scholarships and public-pool memberships for Port Washington families in need of economic assistance.

We are happy to report that 86 Port families are benefiting from this program this summer. First and foremost we thank the dozens of donors who gave so generously to help enrich the summer experience of their neighbors. In particular, we thank St. Stephen’s Church and the Awesome Foundation for their financial support. In addition, Summer Together was awarded a grant from the Greentree Foundation “Good Neighbor” Fund that helped enable the growth of the program, for which we are profoundly grateful.

Our efforts were made possible through our partnership with our nonprofit fiscal agent Parent Resource Center led by the efforts of Trish Class and Jessica Rauch, who have our deepest thanks. We acknowledge the participating camps for their community spirit: Bach to Rock, Berest Dance Center, Blue Moon Project, Camp Invention, Port Youth Activities and Unlimited Sports Action. We also thank the community organizations who helped us to identify eligible campers and families including Littig House, Our Lady of Fatima, Padres en Accion, the Parent Resource Center, the Port Washington Public Library and St. Peter of Alcantara.

Summer Together works closely with the Town of North Hempstead, Supervisor Judi Bosworth and the Town of North Hempstead Parks department. We thank especially our Town Council Member Dina De Giorgio and Parks staff member Jean Zappulla.

The Dolphin Bookshop & Cafe graciously donated the use of its space for Summer Together fundraising events, and the United Methodist Church also provided much-needed meeting space.

Summer Together is organized by Long Island Together, a group of community activists working to improve access to education and enrichment opportunities for children, among other social justice causes. Supporting organizations include The Community Synagogue Social Action Committee, Littig House, Our Lady of Fatima Social Outreach, Padres en Accion Asociacion, Reconstructionist Synagogue of the North Shore, St. Peter of Alcantara Social Ministry, St. Stephen’s Church Outreach Ministry, Temple Beth Israel Social Action Committee and the United Methodist Church PW.
