Readers Write: Pride in town ride service

The Island Now

Jerry Kremer makes some very good points in his Kremer’s Corner of June 23rd.

What really caught my eye was his discussion of ride-sharing and the mention of people needing to keep a doctor’s appointment.

Having this service available would be quite helpful to those who live in the Towns of Hempstead and Oyster Bay.

Town of North Hempstead residents 60 and over have, at their fingertips, a better resource.

The town’s Project Independence sponsors reduced cost (about 50 percent) taxi-rides to doctors, hospitals, labs, etc., by appointment, 24/7.

Rides are restricted to within the town itself with a few exceptions.  I recently availed myself of the service at 5 a.m. going to a hospital for surgery.

I had no need to bother family or friends at such an early hour.

There is also free food-shopping transportation twice a week.

Town residents, call 311 and ask about the transportation program.
