Readers Write: New federal tax plan

The Island Now

I always find the opinion pages in the Manhasset Times of great interest and the November 24th edition is no exception. The majority of the editorials and letters are bemoaning the new federal tax plan though I am still not sure how good or bad this plan is. Opinion is usually dependent on the personal politics of the individual. One thing is obvious to me is that in Nassau County we are almost taxed to death and the Republican plan will make things worse. What local school boards and state and local politicians really fear is that the public will really look at why we are taxed so much and will also look at were the money goes, especially when these deductions disappear. Local school boards seem to overpay for everything while county and state politicians throw away who knows how much money for often questionable purposes. Just look at the hundreds of millions of dollars for Buffalo renewal that has led to indictments of our governor’s aides, NY State Medicare and Medicaid fraud is, I believe still rampant, while at the same time the Manhasset Times always has article after article on county fraud and incompetence.

Transparency is the last thing local and state politicians want but the new federal tax plan might just ramp up demand for this transparency.
