Readers Write: Mail-in ballots pose problems

The Island Now

Most people will agree that there is a convenience to mailing in an absentee voting ballot. Sadly there are pitfalls to making this the norm.

We all heard of the voter fraud that occurred in Paterson, N.J. recently and the possibility for absentee mail-in ballots to be lost in the mail.

I have lived in my house for well over 20 years and I was surprised to receive a Port Washington school budget vote ballot for a non-resident named “Glasser.”

I question how the district clerk for the Port Washington School District could mail out a voting ballot for someone who may or may not have lived in my house in over 20-plus years.

I wonder how many other costly voter mailings were perpetrated in error across Long Island.  Despite the convenience of absentee ballots, in-person balloting must be the norm to safeguard voting from potential fraud and to control costs.
