Readers Write: Lighthouse race gains backers

On behalf of the Great Neck Historical Society, I would like to thank the businesses and individuals who have come forward so far to help to sponsor our Oct. 22 5K Walk/Run to Help Save Stepping Stones Lighthouse.

The Lighthouse, a landmark in our community and an important aid to navigation has fallen upon hard times.

Various engineers have estimated the cost of needed repairs — fixing foundation, roofing, masonry work, complete interior work, installation of windows, installing a heating system to prevent ice damage, etc –—in the millions.

The goal of the Historical Society is to be able to welcome tours to the lighthouse so that everyone will better understand the life of the lighthouse keepers, and the role that Stepping Stones played and continues to play so close to our shore.
