Readers Write: In response to Carl Abraham

The Island Now

I don’t want to review yet again the likely dangers from white LEDs.

I want to react to Carl Abraham’s latest letter from another angle. We know he thinks that Judy Youngblood’s lawsuit against the Village of Great Neck is frivolous. Some of us disagree.

Suppose my neighbor installs an exterior light that shines into my house all night, every night, disturbing both my waking and sleeping hours. I would speak to my neighbor, informing them of the situation. Chances are they didn’t realize the negative impact the light was having.

If he was a cooperative type of person, he would make adjustments, replace the light, or remove the light if necessary, so that it did not intrude upon me inside my own house.

If he was unwilling to make any changes, I’d have to resort to suing him. I think it is the right of each individual homeowner not to have light intruding on them inside his own house, just as there are laws as to how much noise neighbors are allowed to make.

What has happened in Great Neck is that the new LED streetlight, unlike the old streetlight, shines directly into Judy’s house, night after night. She asked the Village of Great Neck to ameliorate this situation, but whatever steps they took, if any, failed to do so.

Judy was then left with no recourse but to sue the Village. Whatever points Carl Abraham made in his letter have no bearing on Judy’s case. The fact is, she is greatly disturbed by this light and has the right to have this situation remedied.
