Readers Write: Give the gift of life, donate blood

The Island Now

How would you like to save someone’s life?

Life is a precious commodity and I think some of us wonder if there is something we can do to help someone in need. I have a suggestion.

St. Anastasia Knights of Columbus Council No. 5911 is hosting a blood drive at St. Anastasia parish in Douglaston.

I am Grand Knight of Council and chairman of the event with my co-chairman Giuseppe Petruso, and with help of Boy Scout troop No. 153 we run this blood drive for St. Anastasia parish.

It will take place on Sunday, Nov. 11 on Veterans Day. The time is between 8:45 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. The address is 45-14 245th St. in Father Smith Hall.

This is a great opportunity for many to truly give the gift of life by donating blood. There is no substitute for human blood. One in three people will need blood sometime during their lives. Blood last only 42 days. Your donation now is critically important.

Close to 2,000 men, women and children in our communities, including cancer, transplant, surgery patients, trauma victims, newborn babies and many others need blood transfusions each day.

Added to all this remember the donation of blood is a sign of social-consciousness because unless people are willing to donate blood, the health of our communities will not do well.

In closing, let me point out that you never know when someone you love needs blood or even yourself. So if you can, please donate the gift of life. You will be glad that you did.

We are doing this on Veteran’s Day to honor our veterans who gave their blood so our nation could live.
