Readers Write: Gilliar book rescue serves G.N. well

The Island Now

I’d like to thank and commend Rebecca Gilliar for her drive to return thousands of discarded Great Neck Library books to Great Neck’s residents.
Also, thank you to everyone else who is helping with this effort (including this newspaper, which has publicized the book give-away).
I stopped by Great Neck House the other day, chatted with Ms. Gilliar, and saw all the tables piled high with books, which Great Neck residents are welcome to bring home and keep for free.
One of the great pleasures of a library — or a book give-away such as this — is that “you never know what you’ll find.”
While browsing there, I stumbled across a book called “Prokofiev’s Soviet Years” — something that would never have occurred to me to look for.
As a musician and history buff, with fond childhood memories of listening to a record of Captain Kangaroo narrating Prokofiev’s “Peter and the Wolf,” I immediately thought “hmm, this looks interesting!”
So that book has a new home now.
But there are may more books sitting over at Great Neck House that need good homes too.
I hope that more Great Neck residents will stop by and enjoy the book give-away.
