Readers Write: G.N. North parking expansion wrong

The Island Now

I have been a resident of Great Neck for 32 years, and for 32 years have enjoyed the beauty and safety of my neighborhood.

Beach Road, where I live, is a bucolic, quiet street lined by trees and surrounded by fields. I was astonished to learn that the Great Neck school system has unilaterally decided to convert a field at the end of my block into a 90 spot parking lot so that the Great Neck North seniors don’t have to be bothered with school busses, car pools, or walking the extra two blocks to available parking.

The amount of extra traffic that will arise, the lack of safety as 90 young drivers will suddenly be driving their individual cars to school ( a luxury most high school students don’t have), the industrialization of our beautiful greenery, have all been pushed through quietly with the other improvements planned for the school system — without any communication with those of us who live here.

We, the neighbors of Great Neck North, should have been made a party to the decision making process, and our needs addressed as well.

I, for one, am heart broken at the planned blight on my beautiful neighborhood and fear for my young grandchildren who live with me.
