Readers Write: Flower Hill Party members the right choice

The Island Now

My name is Jay Beber, and I’ve lived in our community for 35 years.  I’m proud to be a Village of Flower Hill Trustee and although my term is not up until next year, it’s this year’s election I’d like to talk about.

Members of my team, the Flower Hill Party are running in a contested election.  I believe in competition, as I think it makes for a more vibrant community, but, I also believe there has to be a reason to change.

Elections hinge on issues that make things better for the community.

For some reason, Kate Hirsch is trying to make this year’s election about whether someone put Flower Hill after their address on a petition or a litany of veiled accusations.  She filed charges with the board of elections that were all quickly dismissed.

Having served for five years as a trustee I can tell you that every member of the Flower Hill Party is an unpaid public servant working for the good of our Village.

For someone to suggest otherwise flies in the face of the facts. I have never seen a resident bring an issue before the board of trustees that has not been given our fullest attention, always with a positive resolution in mind.

In Kate’s literature and emails, she paints the false narrative that she alone is fighting for residents as opposed to the sitting board members.

Why are the present board’s accomplishments somehow misguided, or as Kate has suggested to me “suspect?”  She has voted affirmatively 98 percent of the time with the present board and was in favor of many of the very things she is now railing against.

We have had no tax increases in four of the last six years, we drive on clean, well-paved streets, have no debt, benefit from a vibrant housing market, and are lucky enough to have a fighting team to keep 5G cell antennas off our front lawns.

Our staff is friendly, experienced and cooperative and from what I gather from conversations with our residents, beloved.  Our board is composed of experienced representatives from all three school districts, and Flower Hill is one of the most desirable neighborhoods in the entire United States.

So, what exactly needs to change? What was always a pleasant forum for residents and Trustees to discuss issues has turned into a shooting match with Kate taking aim at anyone not supporting her candidacy.

I’ve knocked on lots of doors and have had a chance to speak to many residents. I wanted to make sure that everyone knows just how important this election is.

Very few people vote in village elections. Your vote can make a difference, so please go out on March 18 between noon and 9 p.m. to our Village Hall at 1 Bonnie Heights Road and cast a vote for Row A – The Flower Hill Party.

I would appreciate it and I know it will truly make a difference.
