Readers Write: Eagle Scout project focuses on Centennial Gardens

The Island Now

I am a junior at Regis High School and a Life Scout with Troop 4 in Floral Park.  I am currently working towards becoming an Eagle Scout and have recently begun work on my Eagle Scout project, a safety improvement project at Centennial Gardens.  If you are not familiar with Centennial Gardens, they are located at 251 Floral Parkway and are a special place in Floral Park that I highly encourage you visit.  The Floral Park Conservation Society and a completely volunteer team work tirelessly to maintain the natural beauty of the gardens.  Helping to preserve the essence of the Gardens while also ensuring the safety of its visitors is highly important to our community as the Gardens provide a tranquil respite for residents and serve as host to multiple large functions annually.

The project will involve the completion of three main tasks.  The first task is replacing the rope and damaged staves which protect the edges of the Bridge Walk that cuts through the center of the Gardens.  The second task is laying woodchips onto the Bridge Walk to prevent the pathway from becoming a slipping hazard in rainy weather.  The third task is building a split-rail fence in front of a large painted spill wall in the lower area of the gardens.  The fence will help prevent children from climbing the wall and getting injured.

If anyone is interested in making a financial contribution to help fund the project, they can mail a check payable to:
