Readers Write: Duncan right choice for Port police commish

The Island Now

The really great news is Jim Duncan has agreed to continue to be one of our police Commissioners leading us with his proven leadership, unwavering integrity, protecting our tax dollars, providing full disclosure and open meetings and going the extra mile for us. Jim’s careful analysis and business sense has guided the search for upgraded Port Washington police headquarters on a conservative road looking for either an economic realistic way to utilize the current location or to find an economic central location that would meet our growing needs.

This is not an easy solution and Jim has the experience and knowledge to open every door to a responsible decision to upgrade while maintaining quality of life and safety in Port but keeping costs and taxes under control.

I have been attending police meetings for over 20 years and have seen Jim in action.

At the recent League of Women Voters debate Jim Duncan was the one candidate able to articulate and answer all the questions asked of both candidates.

I have witnessed numerous bid and quotation requests issued by the district published in various newspaper and the careful bid openings and analysis over the years.

Legal opinions have consistently been sought to assure compliance so it was disturbing to hear his opponent make unsubstantiated allegations against Jim and the other seated commissioners about these purchasing practices.

Jim has been standing up for us even against adversity making vast improvements in the PWPD for the betterment of all. We have a new chief and executive appointments, many new highly qualified officers at all levels, carefully structured purchasing guidelines and open communications with the public.

Transparency has been apparent to those of us who have been to the meetings. Meetings are now brought out to community location, and residents have consistently been urged to attend and participate.

Jim Duncan has applied his 23 years with Nassau County PD, 48 years as successful Port Washington businessman to the business leadership of the police district. He has continued to give his time to us with 50 years volunteering at Port Washington Fire Department, officer at Elks Club, 14 years co-chair Pride in Port and numerous other organizations.

Please join me on Dec. 5, noon to 9 p.m. at The Polish American Hall on Pulaski Place in Voting to re-elect James Duncan Port Washington police commissioner
